KIHBT is currently hosting a group of 21 Engineers and Architects from the East Africa Region. This diverse cohort includes participants from the Federal Republic of Somalia and the Republic of South Sudan who are undertaking a specialized short-term course on Labour-Based Training Technology in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
This partnership between the Republic of Somalia, JICA, and KIHBT marks the third phase of a comprehensive 3-year program focused on Labour-Based Technology (LBT) for the road sector. It’s worth noting that this is the second time KIHBT is welcoming a training group from Somalia, showcasing the institute’s commitment to capacity building in the region. Through discussions with JICA, South Sudan and Kenya recognized the value of participating in this training initiative.

Yahya, a representative of JICA, expressed satisfaction with the training expansion, highlighting its importance in promoting cross-border networking in the field of transport and infrastructure. The goal of the training program was to enhance infrastructure development in the participants’ respective countries and create employment opportunities by emphasizing the labour-intensive construction and rehabilitation methods of Labour-Based Training.
The trainees were urged to leverage the knowledge and skills gained during the program to make a positive impact on infrastructure and community development upon their return. The Minister of Public Works, Reconstruction, and Housing shared an encouraging message emphasizing the importance of this training for the betterment of their communities.
KIHBT received praise for its dedicated efforts to impart LBT skills in the region. Arch. Geoffrey Githiri, the Deputy Director of KIHBT, commended the trainees for their commitment and encouraged them to actively engage in knowledge-sharing, discussions, and networking opportunities. He also expressed gratitude for the enduring partnership between JICA and KIHBT.
