The Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT) Mwanza campus recently hosted a sports and health event named “Health Day” that brought together employees and students from DIT, as well as people from other colleges, secondary schools, and residents from various parts of Mwanza City.

The event featured free health check-ups for DIT staff, students, and residents, focusing on areas such as HIV, nutrition, hepatitis, eye health, and blood pressure to promote physical fitness. The health check-ups included guidance on nutrition and mental well-being, screenings for conditions like hepatitis and its vaccination, weight management, blood pressure monitoring, eye examinations, HIV/AIDS testing, and counseling services.

Dr. Sebastian Pima, the distinguished guest and Chief Medical Officer of Mwanza City, representing Dr. Thomas Rutachunzibwa, the Regional Medical Officer of Mwanza, encouraged the DIT community to adopt regular health check-ups. He highlighted the importance of prioritizing health through regular exercise and balanced diets.

Mr. William Lohay, the campus Acting Director, stated that the commemoration of Afya Day aligns with government directives to control HIV/AIDS and non-communicable diseases in public service.

Many individuals who received screenings, treatments, and counseling expressed their appreciation to DIT for providing these healthcare services free of charge. This event is part of DIT’s commitment to supporting the national campaign to improve health among Tanzanian residents.

The Health Day kicked off with a 6-kilometer walk from DIT to Malaika Beach and Kwa Tunza Beach, ending back at DIT. The day continued with various entertainment and sports activities such as sack races, a football match between DIT staff and students, a netball game between DIT students and CBE (College of Business Education) students, chicken chasing, rope skipping, and other games.
