The Arusha Technical College (ATC) is in advanced stages to begin the construction of a Hydropower Plant with a capacity to produce 1.6 Megawatts of electricity to provide practical skills training to students studying Hydropower Engineering.
This is part of USD14.6 million funding from the World Bank through the East Africa Skill for Transformation and Regional Integration Project (EASTRIP) to establish the Regional Flagship TVET Institute in renewable energy at ATC.
Through the project, ATC has contracted HNAC Technology Co. Ltd, a Chinese company, to begin the construction at a cost TShs10 billion (USD4 million). It is expected to be completed within 11 months

During the contract signing ceremony, ATC Rector, Prof. Musa Chacha, urged the contractors to move fast to complete the project in the stipulated timelines to facilitate electricity generation and commence of training. He noted that the hydro power plant will complement the Tanzanian government’s effort to extend power to the entire country while providing a valuable facility for teaching and learning. “The electricity that will be generated will be added to the national grid and it will be used to light our homes and cities for the benefit of all Tanzanians”.
Mr. Tader Miao of HNAC Technology Co. Ltd assured that the construction will align with the proposed timeline and budget.
EASTRIP is also supporting construction of dormitories, classrooms, and lecture halls at the Kikuletwa campus to make it the Regional Flagship TVET Institute in renewable energy education.
