KenGen-Geothermal Training Centre (GTC) has underscored its commitment to excellence by enhancing the teaching skills of its trainers through a transformative pedagogy training program.

Over 50 Trainers have successful completed training at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT) and are set to graduate and make a lasting impact on the company’s training programs. The program has significantly boosted the teaching capabilities of trainers, preparing them to deliver effective and engaging learning experiences.

According to EASTRIP Centre Leader and Project Coordinator, Ms. Risper Kandie, the trainers who graduate under the program will be registered under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) in line with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Act No. 29 of 2013. This achievement aligns with the Project Development Objective (PDO) of the East Africa Skills for Transformation and Regional Integration Project (EASTRIP), which is to “increase the access and improve the quality of TVET programs in selected Regional TVET Centres of Excellence and to support regional integration”.

EASTRIP has been instrumental in shaping KenGen-GTC into a Centre of excellence for geothermal training. Through EASTRIP, KenGen GTC has gained access to funding and technical support, enabling the design and implementation of advanced training programs like this pedagogy initiative. The project has provided a framework for aligning the training curriculum with global standards, ensuring trainers are equipped to deliver competency-based education that meets both local and international demands.

EASTRIP’ s emphasis on capacity building has directly influenced the success of the pedagogy training program. By facilitating partnerships with institutions like DeKUT, EASTRIP has enabled KenGen-GTC to access specialized expertise and resources needed to deliver high-quality training. This collaboration ensures that trainers are not only well-versed in technical skills but also proficient in modern teaching methodologies, a critical factor in fostering innovation and excellence in geothermal energy education.

The project’s focus on student-centred pedagogy and competency development has had a ripple effect on KenGen-GTC’s training programs. Trainers are now better equipped to tailor their teaching approaches to the diverse needs of learners, making technical education more accessible and impactful. This alignment with EASTRIP objectives strengthens KenGen-GTC’s role as a regional hub for geothermal training, enhancing its capacity to support Kenya’s renewable energy goals and contribute to workforce development across Eastern Africa.

The pedagogy training has enhanced trainers’ teaching skills, enabling them to deliver effective programs and build a capable workforce, driving innovation and efficiency in geothermal energy production. It has also fostered mentorship and collaboration, boosting morale and professional growth. This initiative underscores KenGen’s commitment to developing a skilled workforce and advancing Kenya’s renewable energy sector, solidifying its leadership in the evolving global energy landscape.
