Kombolcha Polytechnic College has been making progress in its efforts to transform into a flagship institution and center of excellence in the automotive training sector. Through the East Africa Skills for Transformation and Regional Integration Project (EASTRIP), supported by a $12.85 million grant from the World Bank, KPC is working to update its capacity and infrastructure to meet international standards in technical and vocational education and training.

One of the key highlights of the project is the construction of two major buildings on the college’s premises. The first building, a G+4 structure, will house workshops & classrooms, while the second building, a B+2B+G+7 building, will be used for administrative offices, commercial activities, and income-generating purposes. The project has been able to proceed smoothly as both buildings were constructed on the college’s own land, avoiding any land acquisition disputes with the surrounding community.

Stakeholders during the progress review meeting

During a progress review meeting with key stakeholders, Mr. Negesse Kebede, the Environmental and Social Safeguard Specialist, highlighted the college’s commitment to environmentally and socially responsible practices. An Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF) and a Grievance Redressing Mechanism (GRM) have been developed and implemented to ensure compliance with these standards.

Two safeguard specialists have been recruited and deployed to oversee/coordinate environmental and social management practices during the construction process. While significant progress has been made in ensuring the safety of construction workers, challenges remain, particularly in the timely provision of safety equipment such as safety shoes and protective clothing.

Despite some minor injuries reported among construction workers, Mr. Negesse emphasized the importance of promptly addressing these issues to avoid any further incidents. The participants at the progress review meeting commended the rapid construction progress but urged immediate fulfillment of all safety equipment requirements to prevent any risks of injuries or damages.

Overall, Kombolcha Polytechnic College is well on its way to achieving its goal of becoming a center of excellence in technical and vocational education. With the continued support of EASTRIP and the dedication of all stakeholders involved, KPC is poised to make a significant impact in the automotive training sector and beyond.
