The East Africa Skills for Transformation and Regional Integration Project (EASTRIP) is a regional project funded by the World Bank and the governments of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the Republic of Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania.
It is currently being implemented in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania by
the Ministries Responsible for Technical and Vocational Education (TVET) in the
respective countries with regional coordination by the Inter-University Council
for East Africa (IUCEA). The project is in its advanced phase of implementation,
with 31st December 2026, as the project completion date.
The project
has supported the creation of Regional Flagship TVET Institutes (RFTIs) through
a results-based financing model, complemented by technical support, capacity
building, and regional harmonisation activities.
Significant progress has been made in establishing and operationalising the RFTIs, with most centres completing major construction works, equipping specialised laboratories and workshops, and rolling out competency-based training programmes.
Partnerships with industry continue to strengthen through MoUs that
support internships, apprenticeships, curriculum co-design, and joint training.
Student enrolment in specialised programmes is rising, and regional mobility is
expanding as harmonised standards and admission frameworks mature. Faculty
development remains central, with extensive training in Competency based
education and training (CBET), pedagogy, and industry-aligned skills.
At the
regional level, IUCEA has advanced the development of the Regional TVET
Qualifications Framework for Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania, regional
occupational standards, and quality assurance systems. Regular
knowledge-sharing events, steering committee meetings, and benchmarking
missions continue to reinforce coordination across countries.
EASTRIP has
established a strong foundation for transforming specialised TVET skills in
priority growth sectors and deepening regional integration, with current
efforts focused on sustainability, industry relevance, and the long-term
operational strength of the Regional Flagship TVET Institutes.
